Private visit to St. Mark square Basilica and the Doge’s Palace
In this essential tour you’ll discover the most important and visited monuments in Venice: the St. Mark square, the millenary Basilica of St. Mark and the Doge’s Palace. Your private licensed guide will start introducing you to the fundamental questions: why Venice has been founded over muddy islands? When? By Whom? In which way? Only by knowing the answers you’ll can get the proper picture of the city, and the place to know all of this is the center: St. Mark square, the living room of Europe. Everything was started there and everything has to go back. The Basilica of St. Mark is simply the oldest and most important church in Venice, more of 1000 years of history, 80,000 square feet (8,000 square meters) of golden mosaics, a golden altarpiece made by almost 2,000 precious stones, and much more. Optionally we can enter in the most impressive museum in Venice, the Doge’s Palace, the ancient house of the government, with its Grand Council hall 13,000 square feet (1,200 square meters) all covered by historical paintings, the sinister prisons only reachable by crossing the narrow Bridge of Sighs.
Alternatively if you prefer a more external walk, after the Basilica we’ll discover all of those little alleys behind St. Mark Square with their hidden views over little canals and bridges, in order then to reach the Gran Canal in front of the Rialto’s bridge, the oldest and for many centuries the only one crossing the water main boulevard.
The tour last around 3 hrs. Please remember not to wear shorts or skirts above your knees and to cover your naked shoulder when you enter in the church. We run the tour every day, and is conducted by a venetian local guide.
This tour can start from your hotel in Venice or Venice cruise terminal or the most convinient place according to your needs.
